I’m going to attempt to enter a contest with one of my favorite, and popular, mom-bloggers. She is asking other writing parents to submit their best stories, and she will post them on her website! Please vote below for what your favorite story of mine is. If you don’t see yours below, feel free to send your comments with other favorites I may have missed. My submission has to be by Sunday, October 1st.
To help, here is a link to each story mentioned in the poll below. (In no particular order)
In May I decided I was going to sign up for the SF Half Marathon that occurred last Sunday. I thought long and hard about whether this was something I wanted to train for, and whether it was something I actually wanted to complete. But seeing as we all only live once (or at least we probably only remember living once, if you believe in that sort of thing), I figured I’d take a deep breath and sign on the bottom line. ”Yes, I will run 13.1 miles through the streets of San Francisco on July 29th.” (more…)
I think I mentioned this briefly once before, but I’m going to talk about it again because it’s still going on. August loves books, always has, since he could sit up on his own, it was the very first “toy” he could go for. Now it’s his favorite pastime and we’ve been slowing making our way through the “Winnie-the-Pooh” stores. But what has also come about is his desire for us to tell him stories. I don’t know when this started but I think it was about four-ish months ago he just turned to me one day and said, “Mommy, can you tell me a story?” You’d think the fact that I am hoping to one day get paid for writing that I would relish this proposal – well, think again. The pressure is too much, I tell you, too much. (more…)
Last night we went out for dinner in a neighborhood that we hadn’t been to in a while. On our way home we walked by a cosmetic store with this sign in the window “Professionally Validated Age-Eraser”, and I said to Brent “You know you’re old when that sign is actually appealing.” That made me think about what are other signs that tell you (or me in this case) that I’m old? Here’s my list below what are yours? (more…)
Last night when I was lying in bed, not sleeping, I was thinking about how many of my friends have done one of the following things in the past five years: (more…)
Every day August “naps” (whether he chooses to sleep is his decision) from about 12:30pm to at least 2:30pm depending on whether he falls asleep. Some days he’s in there for three hours, some days it’s close to four, but he’s always in there for at least two. So this begs the question, what the hell do I do with my “time off”? Fuck, if I know. (more…)
I was going through some old photos on Friday looking for a picture of Brent’s old Toyota MR2 to show to August just how cool is Dad was/is. Unfortunately, I didn’t find the picture, so I guess I’ll have to prove it to him some other way. I’m sure I’ll think of something…. (more…)
About two weeks ago someone actually referred to me in an email as a “writer.” It was a simple email to a group of people for a local mom’s group consisting of 4,000 members, and in the middle of that email a woman said, “…and I’ve found a writer to help us out…” – THAT’S ME! No one’s ever called me that before; it felt quite strange, but nice. (more…)
Recently I was catching up on my Facebook stalking, and read about how one friend of mine drove over three hours to see her best friend perform her last concert. These two ladies have been friends for literally decades now and it’s hard to maintain that closeness for so long. They’ve had to overcome getting married, having children, living further apart from each other, having jobs, and simply put, growing up. Yet it appears through their Facebook posts, at least, that they are as close as ever. It’s truly a beautiful thing, and I have to admit, I’m jealous. Unfortunately, I have not been as successful in maintaining this kind of closeness with anyone. (more…)
