Mean toddlers

August 30, 2011

August has begun to make requests on how we will spend our mornings and afternoons, and I do my best to accommodate (within reason of course).  This morning he requested that we pop by the Academy of Sciences.  We didn’t have much time (my parents are coming up for a quick visit) so we went straight to the penguins.  In the same room as the penguins, there are about ten different exhibits with life-sized stuffed animals from the jungle.  There are zebras, giraffes, lions, tigers, monkeys, etc.  In that room there are also some interactive TVs that you can touch and it plays an “educational” video about that animal. Mom day? Nope – me day.

August 29, 2011

A “Mom Day” is what I have Monday through Friday.  A “Me Day” is what you have without anyone else around.  No babies.  No husband.  No friends.  That’s a “Me Day”.  (more…)

Hurricane Irene

August 27, 2011

I know this is going to sound possibly naive, insensitive, stupid, and ignorant, but I’m jealous of the people who are forecasted for Hurricane Irene. I can’t help it, but I have fond memories of Hurricane season living in Houston, Texas. We moved to Houston when I was seven years old.  My father was told that the house we moving into was in what they called the “Hundred Year Flood Zone”, but that we should get flood insurance just in case.  Coming from Pennsylvania, we had no experience with floods or hurricanes, but seeing as insurance was so inexpensive, it seemed like a good idea. Paid? No. Writing? Yes!

It’s up! A bit of a struggle, lots of back and forth discussion, but it’s there, finally.  Please check it out and I’d love to hear what you think. (more…)

Writer’s block or just plain fear?

August 25, 2011

I’m not quite ready to let the cat out of the bag yet, but I got myself a writing gig, non-paying mind you, but still.  Once a week I will be posting on a website and I’m suppose to be a fun-loving, creative, thrifty, innovative, no-holds barred, Mom with a witty sense of humor who has some good shit to share with other Moms out there looking for advice, or maybe just a smile.  My first post is due tonight to be posted tomorrow (more details tomorrow after I know it’s going up).  I thought it made sense to do an intro of sorts so my new readers out there can get a sense for who I am and what I’ll be writing about.   (more…)

My dirty little secret

August 24, 2011

I’ve been watching All My Children, the soap opera, off and on since I was about twelve years old.  As my mother tells the story, there was one summer we had a babysitter who stayed with us all day long, and instead of bringing us to the pool or the playground, we stayed inside and watched the ABC soap operas for three hours straight.  My sister got hooked on General Hospital, and All My Children was my thing. There’s a Gack in town

August 23, 2011

If I’ve learned anything about August what-so-ever over the past two years, it’s that when he says something, he’s not making it up, he’s probably not even mispronouncing something.  If I don’t understand what he’s saying, it’s usually my fault.  His little brain is a constant stream of conscienceness, so if I’m not following him, it’s because I’m not quick enough.  The more time you spend with him, the more likely you are to follow his brain down whichever rabbit hole it goes. Job interview

August 22, 2011

A few months ago when I was trying to figure out what I wanted to be when I grow up, I came up with two solutions: open a knit shop, or become a writer.  I didn’t have the balls to open a knit shop, and I’ve always wanted to try writing, so here I am.  However, one of the agreements Brent and I made when we decided to switch was that I would need to make some money to pick up the slack we were missing from my old job.  I considered many ideas including waiting tables, teaching, babysitting, working at the Gap even, but then when I walked by my favorite knit shop a few months ago, I thought, “Ah, now this is perfect.” (more…)

In celebration of August’s second birthday on Tuesday, August and I went to our local nursery, chose some flowers, picked out the perfect sunny spot to plant them, dug a hole in our backyard, and planted them.  On Saturday night, yesterday, we came home from his birthday party only to find that our neighbors had dug them up, and moved them in about seven feet away into a shady spot. You can imagine my reaction. (more…)

Is twenty minutes better than nothing?

August 20, 2011

I had a friend from out of town come interview for a job at my old company once.  He wasn’t my best friend or anything, but we did enjoy some good banter on a regular basis.  When he came to town, I hadn’t seen him for five years.  He flew in the night before his interview came to our office at 9am and it was over by lunch time.  His flight back to Ohio was scheduled for 4pm that same day.  Once he was done interviewing, I went down to the lobby and escorted him to the train back in to San Francisco (my office was in Oakland across the bay).   (more…)
